Charcoal-pots-for-websiteCharcoal pots on sale in Mohammed’s stall in Serekunda market, The Gambia

Since appearing on a Forest School Facebook page these charcoal pots have proved very popular.  The ones we sell are made in Serekunda market by Mohammed and his team.  They gather old oil cans and indeed any metal item and make their charcoal pots, by hand, crimping the joints with a small hammer.

They are used all over the Gambia (and indeed many other parts of West Africa). They come in various shapes and sizes, but are mainly either round or square.  They have a tray for charcoal (some people may use wood but this not so efficient) and an opening so that the flow of air can be regulated. They are designed to be more efficient that open fires to try reduce the demand for firewood and also to reduce the amount of smoke released.

They are typically found in The Gambia and other West African countries, but they have proved very popular in UK forest schools.  They provide a safe opportunity for children to light a fire and toast marshmallows or cook sausages or brew tea.
